The Economic Buzz Café

Sebastopol, California

The AE Café is about gathering together to share ideas and explore the origins and development of economics and finance that will then ignite a conversation in the relaxed and friendly setting of Sebastopol's Living Room – Coffee Catz Restaurant on Sebastopol Ave. Economic life is now the shared responsibility of all human beings, not just the province of bankers, financial planners and experts. Let's explore the ideas and practices of finance and economics in the light of Associative Economics – a collaborative and accountable approach to understanding modern economic life.

The thinking behind economic and financial ideas and practices affect us all whether we are conscious about it or not. Step into another world at the ae cafe and have a cup of coffee or chill with a glass of water or wine for an economic conversation that can be more quickening than the speed of light. From the perspective of Associative Economics, the human being is at the heart and soul of economic life and any science of economics needs to take this fact into account. Economics, like science, is about both theory and practice, the point being how to have them meet.

Focus on Financial Literacy

The perception that financial literacy is an essential life-skill is now widespread, but what does it mean to be financially literate? A plethora of initiatives has arisen over the course of the past 25 years, both independently and sponsored by the state. They variously set out to educate the young, to counteract financial exclusion, and to implement effective financial planning. But what do people have in mind? For example, does financial literacy mean being able to work the numbers so that one ends up secure and wealthy, a purely technical kind of skill, or does it touch the question of how one orientates oneself in life, bringing inner purposes to expression? Furthermore, one can ask whether today's drive towards financial literacy is born of an educational ideal (becoming financially mature) or of the need to manage an external crisis (the debt and pension problem). This article surveys examples from both sides of the Atlantic that aim to promote a better understanding of finance. [Read the full article]
